Bio:
Hailing from the musically rich center of Detroit, afra behn brings a unique sound, which is a blend of various forms of music, ranging from soul, hip-hop, and funk to rock, techno, and jazz. While not sounding like many generic neo-soul groups, afra behn’s songwriting and vocal arrangements are reminiscent of eighties rhythm and blues. As far as the hip-hop element is concerned, his sound comes from the same roots as “Golden Age” hip-hop (circa 1986 – 1994). Drawing inspiration from the various innovative groups of this era, afra behn maintains the integrity of hip-hop. Funk is also an essential element in the sound. He utilizes various synthesizers, vocoders, and vocal effects to achieve a unique balance with the other musical influences, which helps the blend into electronic forms of music such as, house and techno. The result is amazing.

The journey started in Detroit, with afra behn’s introduction to hip-hop music in the early eighties. An insatiable appetite for all types of hip-hop consumed the passionate and eager "double-deck" cassette producer from an early age. The influence of soul and jazz he picked from his parents record collection as a youngster became crude hip-hop loops. Crude loops would transform themselves into innovative hip-hop and would first manifest themselves into the form of a critically acclaimed local Detroit hip-hop group called Ditmot. As afra behn moved on to college in Atlanta, he gradually started to incorporate more southern influences in his music and became open to even more types of music, adding to the melting pot of sounds which he already had been utilizing. Eventually, he would link up with R&B producers Tricky & Sean (Chante' Moore, Sole', Tyrese, Blu Cantrell, etc...) and become a daily fixture at the Red Zone Entertainment studios. This experience would teach him many crucial aspects of music production including vocal arrangement and many recording techniques.

Upon graduation, afra behn migrated back to Detroit to resurrect Ditmot into a formidable group on the Detroit hip-hop scene and help create another group called Ichabods Tree. While both groups were moderately successful, afra behn always felt his sound was meant to reach a much larger audience. After not receiving the response from his music that he felt was warranted, afra behn moved to New York City to explore other opportunities, which did not present themselves to him in Detroit. As a result, afra behn would further expand and enhance the sound by working with a plethora of focused, talented artists, musicians, rappers, and singers. Currently, afra behn is poised to make a major impact on the music industry with his debut solo album featuring other talented artists called “Conformity”. Conformity is the culmination of his journey through the world of music and his experiences in life. Welcome to the Vibe Machine.
